Basic Skills for Young Dragons, 9-13 Years Old

Block A

1. Stances: Horse, bow, crane
Stepping: Overhead stretch kicks, crab walking
Strikes: Horizontal fist punch to midsection
Kicks: Front stretch, front thrust (ball of foot)
Blocks: Circling blocks inward, circling blocks outward, downward outward with fist, downward inward with fist, overhead with fist

 

2. Stances: Horse, bow, lying leg
Stepping: Overhead stretch kicks, frog jumps
Strikes: Horizontal fist punch to midsection, willow leaf
Kicks: Side stretch, side kick (hitting with heel)
Blocks: Circling blocks inward, circling blocks outward, mid-level inward with fist, mid-level outward with fist

 

3. Stances: Horse, bow, shao ma bu
Stepping: Overhead stretch kicks, duck walking (box stance)
Strikes: Horizontal fist punch to midsection, vertical punch
Kicks: Pendulum stretch kick, back kick
Blocks: Circling blocks inward, circling blocks outward

Block B

4. Stances: Lean Forward and Search for the Sea
Stepping: Horse stance, forward bow, cat, crane
Strikes: Horizontal punches (high, middle, low), Palm strikes (high, middle, low)
Kicks: Outside wheel kick, inside wheel kick
Blocks: Rising elbow to protect head

 

5. Stances: Swallow Skims the Water
Stepping: Horse, bow, cat, crane
Strikes: Horizontal back fist, vertical back fist
Kicks: Roundhouse (instep and ball of foot), hook
Blocks: 10 point blocking set

 

6. Stances: Box stance
Stepping: Shuffle step in horse stance
Strikes: Spear hands (high, middle, low)
Kicks: Front-side combination, front snap kick from crane
Blocks: 10 point blocking set

7. Stances: Back stance
Stepping: Lying leg sweeps (forward and backward)
Strikes: Panther fist to throat
Kicks: Front stomp and side kick to knee, spinning back kick
Grappling: Break falls

 

8. Stances: Sitting Buddha
Stepping: Cross-stepping in horse (front and rear cross)
Strikes: Eagle claws, tiger claws
Kicks: Rising heel kick,; cross-step rising heel kick
Grappling: Front and rear rollouts

 

9. Stances: Dragon Stance
Stepping: Bamboo stepping
Strikes: Hammer fist
Kicks: Vertical and roundhouse knee strikes, jump front kick, jump side kick
Tumbling: Cartwheels, back springs

10. Strikes: Spinning back fist
Kicks: Spinning hook kick
Grappling: Overhead throw form

 

11. Strikes: Inner and outer forearm strikes (tam tui style)
Kicks: Jump double front kick (chicken kick)
Grappling: Heavy bag throws (hip, bear hug, leg sweep)

 

12. Strikes: Inward ridge hand, rising wheel punch (to chin), upper cut punch
Kicks: Scissors kick takedown
Grappling: Belt cracking (bending over, horse, pivoting left and right bow)
