February, 2000
The Year of the Dragon is here! Or is it the Year of the Peaceful
Dragon? For all of our members and students and everyone who visits us,
I hope it will be a year of great health and fortune. Coupled with the
start of the new millennium, this is an exciting time and we're already
busy planning all kinds of interesting events, workshops and classes for
this new year. May the spirit of the Dragon be with you always!
As you know by now, our annual Chinese New Year's celebration had to be
postponed due to the threat of bad weather. The new date is February
12th. If you have a reservation but can't make this date, refunds are
available until February 5th. For anyone who hadn't planned to come
before, this is a second chanceäthese dinners are great fun!

WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON (February 5th, 2000 - January 23rd,
2001) Drama characterizes the Dragon Year, both in lavish events and in
unpredictability. The year is marked at the beginning and end by
significant international developments. The bizarre and unexpected are
associated with this sign. The performing arts, fashion, and cultural
events come under favorable auspices - the more original the better.
Magnificent projects and outlandish schemes are the order of the day.
Financially the feel-good factor sweeps us along on a wave of elation;
risks are taken, fortunes are made and lost. As the Dragon brings good
fortune, this is an auspicious year in which to get married, and also to
have a baby, since Dragon children bring luck to the household. Starting
a business or initiating a major project in this year will all bring
success.

Congratulations! At our annual Chinese New Year's banquet each year we
present awards and promotional certificates to our very deserving
students. As you know, The Peaceful Dragon does not assign belt rankings
in our martial arts classes. This is because we follow the traditional
Chinese approach where we are not competing against or comparing
ourselves with others, but rather taking the very personal journey of
improving ourselves. However, there are a couple of milestones we reach
that are significant and which we recognize.
The first is becoming an official A.C.C.S. (American Center for Chinese
Studies) lineage student, which you are eligible for after one year of
continuous training, with demonstration of good character.
Congratulations to the following people who have become lineage
students:
Lisa Phipps, James Phipps, Stephen Wang, Levi Patrutz, Edric Yearwood, Matt Lail,
Wybrechtje Smit, Kathy Nguyen, Anne Nguyen, Tanya Nguyen, Lan Nguyen, Missy Ilardo,
Steve Reinhardt, Kimberly Edwards, Louise Johnson, Anthony Iannone, Stephanie Iannone,
Danny Lucey, Shawn Hammond, Alberto Guzman, Vincent Stubbs,
Rachael Hooper, Thomas Kindberg, Margaret Green, Katie Wright, Lena Skalaban,
Mary Boulton, Enrique Sanchez, Joyce Severso Woodward, Heloise McProuty,
Lawrence Boblas, Christopher Lok, Andrea Boblas, Leslie Holland, Marcia Ilardo, Ching Hsiao,
Michael Barclift, Lee Barclift, Mike Barclift, Dale Guadagna,
Melanie Snider, Curley Thatch, Geoffrey Bragg, Tom Galpin
The next level of achievement is reaching Disciple Level, which one
is eligible for after 5 years of continuous training with continued
development of good character and a demonstrated peaceful and meditative
approach to martial arts training. Sifu Sbarge has been teaching in
Charlotte for just 5 years and this year we have our first promotions to
this level. Congratulations to these dedicated disciples:
Sherry Lu, Leonard Roberts, Aaron Arden, Wesley Adams, Eric Mullis
OVERDUE?! Folks, unfortunately this is a hot issue. If you haven't
converted your student Easypay account to Telecheck, you are overdue.
You must see Wes or George immediately if you want to continue your
classes. Please take care of this simple obligation now, thanks.
(Please let us know if there is some other problemäif you have
discontinued your classes, for example.)
