Monthly Challenge
December, 2012
December's theme is Relaxation. Relaxation is important to a martial artist.
It keeps the muscles from over-tensing, leading to injuries. Finding the
time to relax during the holidays is important too. The holiday season
can be a crazy, busy time for a lot of people. Stress and short tempers are common.
Our associated challenge this month is Meditation.
Take the time to meditate a little bit each day this month. This can be
done through meditating during a slow form, holding Universal Post for a
time, or even simply taking a few minutes to sit and focus on your breathing.
As you get into this habit, you will find that you will be more relaxed and
rechargedand ready to dive back into your crazy, busy life. Let us know on Facebook how your challenge is going!
November, 2012
November's theme is Self-Control. Self-control is the ability to
change your own behavior in order to receive a reward or avoid a punishment.
Our associated challenge this month is Celebrate Nutrition.
As we begin the holiday season, remember to exercise self-control with your holiday meals.
Make certain to eat a balanced diet and minimize treats. Keep up with regular exercise
as well to help you meet your health goals. Good luck! Let us know on Facebook how your challenge is going!
October, 2012
Keeping track of time and planning accordingly can be difficult for
some people. The ability to keep your word by keeping your
appointments is important. It is a way of showing respect to others by
respecting their time as well as a way of showing respect to yourself
by removing the stress of being constantly behind.
Our associated challenge this month is Get to Class
on Time! Check yourself. When you come to class, are you in your line,
dressed appropriately, and waiting quietly before your teacher enters?
This is a show of good Wu De. Of course we know some people are late
because of work and other commitments. However, if you are constantly
5-10 minutes late to class, take a moment to figure out why. The next
step will be to correct that reason. Is traffic slowing you down?
Leave a few minutes earlier! Find an accountability partner in class
to help hold you to your goals. Good luck! Let us know on Facebook how your challenge is going!
September, 2012
September's theme is Discipline! Often people think
of discipline as something to teach to
kids and forget that we as adults need to continue to cultivate our
self-discipline. This involves doing what is right or necessary, even
when we don't feel like it. This applies to our training too. We
must remain disciplined to complete the practice that is necessary to
improving our arts.
Our associated challenge this month is Make It Right! To quote Sifu,
"Fix one mistake every day and at the end of the year you have fixed
365 mistakes." This month, your challenge is to fix 10 mistakes in
your form. Having the discipline to practice and erase these mistakes
is essential. Let us know on Facebook
how your practice is progressing!
August, 2012
August's theme is Strength! In both Kung Fu and Tai Chi,
having a strong root is very important. Finding your stance and
keeping your balance are essential to so much of our training.
Our associated challenge this month is Stance Training! Pick a few of
the stances you struggle with and spend a minimum of five minutes on
them daily. Sneak in some practice while you are brushing your teeth
or cooking your dinner, anywhere that you stand still for a few
minutes. By the end of the month, your root will be stronger than you
expect! Let us know on Facebook where you are finding time to practice
your stances!
We have created a monthly Theme and Challenge for our Adult Students.
Each month, a theme will be chosen to tie together all of our
different classes. A related challenge will be given.
We would love to track your results with the challenge on our
Facebook page.
Feel free to post pictures
and videos or simply write about how you are meeting the challenge.
July, 2012
July's theme is Focus! Focus in our martial
arts is important to improve our skills. Focus in our daily lives allows
us to complete necessary tasks on time. Our associated challenge this
month is Listening Skills! Remove the distractions from your daily
conversations and focus on who you are talking to. Don't text while you
are talking to someone else. Listen with your ears, your eyes, and
your body. Face the person that you are talking to and make eye
contact as they talk. Be amazed as this simple courtesy improves your relationships!
Tell us on Facebook how your Listening Skills have improved this month!
June, 2012
June's theme is Speed! This can be anything from making your Kung Fu
forms faster to slowing down your Tai Chi. Keep in mind as you work
your forms that accuracy is important. Speed without accuracy is just
a mess! Our associated challenge this month is Time Management! The
challenge is to cut down the time you waste on entertainment mediawhether
it is video games, TV shows, or surfing the internet. Make
your goals to cut your daily media consumption down to at least half
of your current amount. Sifu would love to have us only spent one
hour a day on empty media. Can you make it? Let us know on Facebook what you are doing with your new free
time!
