Message from Sifu Eric Sbarge

sifu Doors open and then they close. When you have the chance to enter but you miss that chance, that chance might be gone forever. Right now every Peaceful Dragon student has the chance to enter the door of deeper understanding and commitment to your training by taking advantage of Grandmaster's special workshop right here in Charlotte. While many students have signed up, a surprising number have not. It seems that several of you don't see that the door is being held open for you right now, for your benefit.

At the start of every class you bow to the portrait of Grandmaster and Great Grandmaster because they are the links to the lineage and heritage of the great arts we practice here at The Peaceful Dragon. To have the chance to train with one of these links while he is still alive is a rare gift, and to miss it is a big misfortune.

Miss something? Click here for previous newsletters.

Some of you have had the chance to study under Grandmaster in the past and have seen first hand the exceptional level of skill, experience and expertise that he has acquired in his 50 years of intensive study and training with some of the world's most renowned masters. If you've not met him before you can't appreciate this skill, nor can you know how inspiring he is and how effectively he is able to pass on what he knows. I assure you that he is engaging, fun to work with and ultimately enlightening. To train under him and hear his expert perspectives on tai chi and martial arts, qigong and meditation is something you will benefit greatly from.

If I've failed to make some of my students see the lasting value in meeting and training with our inimitable Grandmaster, I regret it and apologize for it. I regret too if I've failed to make my students understand the respect due our grandmaster. The fact that we can benefit from any of the arts taught here is solely due to Grandmaster's untiring efforts in practicing them and passing them on to us. The respect due to our Grandmaster can best be demonstrated, it would seem to me, by meeting him and learning from him at his workshop. As your teacher I try to live by and set an example of Wu-de (the ethics and morals of the martial and spiritual arts we're engaged in.) I wouldn't miss this workshop for anything.

I promise you that you are not too inexperienced, or too old, or too poor or too clumsy to take part in this special workshop. As Grandmaster said from the start, this is for every one of his grand students here in Charlotte. There will be something for everyone and he is genuinely interested in meeting with and teaching every student here. If you have budget problems, please see me. If you have to work during part of the workshop, come to the other parts. If you genuinely can't attend for some reason I of course understand and I hope there will be another chance in the future for you to meet Grandmaster. But please don't pass by this open door without first looking in and seeing where it could lead.

Sifu Sbarge and Peaceful Dragon students visit with Master McSweeney

Great Kung-Fu Training in New York with the Masters
On September 27th Sifu Sbarge and seven Peaceful Dragon students flew up to New York to attend the workshop on Power Strikes led by Master John McSweeney. Master McSweeney, who has trained in Chinese and Japanese martial arts for over 50 years and who holds a 10th degree black belt in kenpo, taught our own Grandmaster Frank DeMaria in the early 1960s. Now 74 years old, Master McSweeney still showed extraordinary speed, strength and energy in his technique but more importantly he offered a wealth of knowledge on the history of martial arts here in America as well as essential principles of chi kung and self-defense.

While the workshop was great, the trip was even more worthwhile as everyone got a chance to witness martial arts history in the making as Grandmaster DeMaria was promoted by Master McSweeney to 8th Degree Black Belt in kenpo.

Best news of all: Sifu Sbarge invited Master McSweeney to lead a seminar right here in Charlotte, and Master McSweeney accepted the invitation! He will lead a half-day seminar on Saturday, Jan. 19th, 2002. The cost is only $30 per person so don't miss it. See details elsewhere in this newsletter.

Grandmaster DeMaria will lead a three-day intensive workshop on tai chi, meditation and Shaolin, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 2-4th.

This workshop is for every Peaceful Dragon student aged 12 and up including our senior citizens. Students will split into groups based on interests, skill and physical condition. For example, senior citizens who study tai chi will focus on tai chi practice and principles throughout the three days, while shao-lin students will work on a more physical mixture of shao-lin and tai chi.

fan All students will learn the exotic Yang style tai chi fan form—a beautiful and graceful form integrating healthful chi kung with unique combat applications! For details review the flier at The Peaceful Dragon.

Fans for Grandmaster's workshop are now available at the front counter.

Here's the schedule.

What's Up?

Master John McSweeney Coming to Charlotte
Saturday, January 19th, 2002 1-4pm Master John McSweeney will lead a half-day seminar on "Power Striking." Master McSweeney holds a 10th degree black belt in kenpo and has nearly 50 years of experience in other martial arts including kung-fu, judo and jujitsu. Master McSweeney was one of the original students of the late great grandmaster Ed Parker, and he is credited with having helped master Parker formulate his popular kenpo style. Master McSweeney can be characterized as a true old-school gentleman who you'll find to be funny and entertaining, very knowledgeable, and even at 74 years of age a guy you definitely want on your side if you're walking down a dark alley.

The workshop will run from 1-4PM and is only $30 per person. You'll enjoy a great self-defense workout, gain new insights into combat strategy, plus have a rare opportunity to ask questions of this highly experienced kung-fu master. Sign up now at the front counter.

Grandmaster's Website
If you have not yet visited the accs website, you need to do so before grandmaster comes, and familiarize yourself with the archives. Visit www.kungfu.org. Even if you don't go to the workshop, come and support the operation of your school.

Annual Banquet

Monthly Discussion
Monthly Discussion topic is "Cultivating Chi," Wednesday, November 7 at 8pm.

Vitamins and Herbs
If you're wondering what else you can do to maintain a better, healthier life, after the practice you have started with The Peaceful Dragon, after the lifestyle changes you have made to your diet, sleep, or maybe the company you were keeping, the answer is here NOW. Stop by the front counter and browse the catalog of vitamins and herbal supplements and health foods available from this high quality company. Sifu and Debra looked long and hard to find them and would not endorse a separate commercial venue in the tea house if they weren't convinced of its value. They use the products regularly, and so do many other students. You can't beat the prices or the quality anywhere else. Fill out the order form any time. Debra places group orders on the first of each month.

Volunteering

Volunteers Needed for Dinner for Grandmaster
Help is needed to set up for and cleanup after Grandmaster's banquet dinner on Friday, Nov. 2nd at 7pm. Please see Shawn Hammond or Jennifer Schultz for details, or inquire at the front counter.

Words to Light Your Path

"As it acts in the world, the Tao is like the bending of a bow. The top is bent downward; the bottom is bent up. It adjusts excess and deficiency so that there is perfect balance. It takes from what is too much and gives to what isn't enough. Those who try to control, who use force to protect their power, go against the direction of the Tao. They take from those who don't have enough and give to those who have too much. The Master can keep giving because there is no end to her wealth. She acts without expectation, succeeds without taking credit, and doesn't think she is better than anyone else."
