Message From Sifu Eric Sbarge

For more than half my life I've been a (mostly) serious student and practitioner of martial arts, yoga, meditation and chi kung. While these arts share many of the same methods and benefits, each develops us in unique ways with differing emphasis. As I get a little older, I see more clearly how the underlying emphasis for each of these arts has to be our good health - be it physical, mental or spiritual. Progress is difficult if our health and vitality are compromised.

sifu Whether you are interested in being a skilled fighter, a strong and flexible person, a calm and peaceful person, a wiser and more insightful person, or all of the above, first and foremost comes your good health. With that in mind I've been focusing more and more of my time on the health aspects of my training, and finding ways to better help my students understand and maintain optimum health. Medical Chi Kung has been a significant focus of my health studies.

I'm happy to be able to pass on much of what I've been studying and researching in the field of Medical Chi Kung through our upcoming lecture and intensive workshop. Whether you are active in any of the above mentioned arts or not, I think you will find the field of Medical Chi Kung fascinating. The methods are practical and of benefit to everyone, even if you are already immersed in other "health-giving" arts. Please come to the free lecture and find out more about it - and consider joining the workshop to make Medical Chi Kung a part of your daily life.

What's New?

Upcoming Demonstrations: The Peaceful Dragon will be demonstrating Tai Chi at 12 Noon on Thursday, October 7th uptown at The First Union Atrium at 2 First Union on the corner of Tryon and 3rd. Tai chi students please wear your uniform and come to participate, or just watch! Then on Saturday, October 16th at Noon we will be demonstrating our lion dance, tai chi, kungfu, yoga and more at The Novello Festival at the Uptown Library. Again, come out and watch or participate! Students, the practice and rehearsal schedule is posted in Studio A.

Help Grandmaster: Due to an unexpectedly high rent hike, our Grandmaster Frank DeMaria has been forced to close the A.C.C.S. school in Buchanan, NY. Fortunately, he has already found new space in the nearby village of Croton-on-Hudson where he plans to re-open.

As is always the case with a move, he faces a great deal of work and many expenses. The Peaceful Dragon is taking up a collection to send a Red Envelope to help establish the new center. Sifu Sbarge is starting things off with a personal contribution of $200, and he hopes that students will also make a contribution, large or small. Donations to the red envelope should be left at the tea house counter by Friday, October 22nd.

Young Dragon News: Congratulations to Ann Nguyen and Leni Irrizarry who have been selected as our first two Young Dragon Leaders. This is part of our new "rewards and incentives" program. Being chosen as a leader is an honor because it means one has shown dedication and has a good handle on the basic techniques and philosophies of Shaolin kung fu. It also is a responsibility. Leaders help others learn the basics and the forms, and always seek to make themselves better than they are today. Next month, we'll have more news on the rewards and incentives program for Young Dragons. Meanwhile, keep working hard.

Classes and Workshops

An intensive Medical Chi Kung will be led by Sifu Eric Sbarge on Saturday, October 23rd and Sunday, October 24th. Want to check it out before you decide? Don't miss the free lecture Saturday, October 9th at 7:30pm.

Emphasis will be on teaching practical medical chi kung (qigong) methods to help you maintain your health, or to help you overcome current illnesses and diseases. Discover for yourself how the mind impacts the health and balance of your vital internal organs, and how the state of these organs affects the state of your mind. Learn why dozens of "symptoms" may really be indications of greater illness or imbalance in the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys or digestive system, and learn specific exercises and meditations to help you overcome such ailments.

Sifu Sbarge brings to this workshop two decades of experience as a student and teacher of chi kung, tai chi, meditation and yoga health arts. Many of the exercises to be presented are those of Master Liang Shou-Yu, a Chinese "coach of excellence" and author of the authoritative book Qigong Empowerment. Master Liang has practiced chi kung for more than fifty years, and has traveled extensively throughout China visiting hospitals and seeking the most effective chi kung methods. Sifu Sbarge holds a medical chi kung teaching certificate from Master Liang.

Sifu recommends that interested students buy Qigong Empowerment before the workshop. The book is available from The Peaceful Dragon and major bookstores. Master Liang's accompanying videos will also be available at the workshop at discounted prices.

Workshop dates/times: Saturday, October 23rd from 1 - 6pm. Sunday, the 24th from 10am - 6pm. Prices: $199 public, $149 members, and $99 for Peaceful Dragon students. Lunch on Sunday is included.

Meditation for a Healthy and Prosperous New Millenium: Everybody is busy at work preparing their computers, homes, and businesses to meet the Y2K crisis, but no one is preparing their mind.

On November 6th, in one of our free Saturday night lectues, Phra Mana Viriyarampo, a Buddhist monk from Thailand and an internationally renowned teacher of yoga and meditation, will discuss how you can cope with your inner crisis and achieve peace and well-being. This lecture will be followed by an intensive four-week course on Saturday, November 13th - December 11th, from 4 - 7pm.

The course will review some material taught in the previous course - including specific meditation and breathing techniques, overcoming problems, yoga, use of the mind, and a look at some Buddhist ideas - as well as offering new material for those already with some experience. Cost to the public is $99, members & students just $69.

(A Comment From the Editor: Taken in conjunction with Sifu Sbarge's Medical Chi Kung workshop, it would be difficult to imagine a better value or one that could more profoundly improve your life.)

Words to Light Your Path

"Regarding the Kuan-Yin method of listening to sounds, 'you let sounds come to your ears without trying to distinguish them. Remaining natural, relaxed, and detached, you spontaneously know what the sounds are without trying to recognize them or deliberate their meaning. Eventually you will find you can hear quiet as well as sounds, and will discover that they are both the same thing - sounds and silence are both objects of hearing,' and this realization can eventually lead to detachment and eventually enlightenment." - excerpted from Twenty-five Doors to Meditation: A Handbook for Entering Samadhi by William Bodri and Lee Shu-Mei, in "Tricycle", Fall 1999.
