Requirements for Rank Promotions
Little Dragons and Young Dragons have a required curriculum (posted on
our web site) and an attendance requirement of an average of eight
classes per month in order to be eligible to be promoted to the next
sash level each quarter. They will test in class during the last week of
classes each month (third week on the final month before promotions)
and must earn three stripes before the quarter is over (before two
quarters are over for advanced students on a six-month promotion cycle
- Green Sash II and above). Stripes include a black stripe for
satisfactory basics, a red stripe for satisfactory forms, and a white
stripe for satisfactory techniques and sparring. These stripes will
be taped to their sashes, and will be recorded on the wall chart in
the studio as well.
If they earn their three stripes and have met the attendance
requirement, they are eligible for promotion. Promotion is not
automatic: At the discretion of the instructors, even if the above
requirements are fulfilled the student may not be promoted if there
are serious behavior problems or other circumstances that would make
the reward of promotion undeserved. Such circumstances will be
discusses with the child and parent.
If during the quarter students are falling behind on the curriculum
requirements or they are absent too many days, they can take 30 minute
private makeup classes. In the private class the student will work on
the curriculum area where he or she is having problems, and each private
class counts as two group classes for attendance purposes. The class
must be scheduled in advance with George Lu. The fee for the private
class is $30.
If a student misses an in-class test or fails the test, it can be made
up the following month. If it happens on the final month before
Promotion Day, the student will have one additional week before
Promotion Day to schedule private makeup classes, or a private testing
(same fee as private class).
Tiny Tigers do not have these attendance and curriculum requirements
since they do not test for colored sashes. They automatically earn
colored chevrons each quarter, recognizing their participation and
signifying their advancement. They are expected to participate in the
quarterly Promotion Day.
