Meditation Course – Level One

This 10-week Level One meditation course will be led by Master Sbarge every Wednesday night from 8-9:15pm beginning on January 6th. Discover the traditional Chan (Zen) and Taoist approaches to developing greater focus and awareness, reducing stress and worry, and boosting health and overall happiness. This course will blend both discussion and theory with actual practice. The fee is $149 for the public, $69 for students or family members not in our Mastery program, free for students in our Mastery program. Intro to YIN yoga and Restorative Yoga Weekend

We are opening up Weekend Seven of Balanced Unity 200 hour Teacher Training with Yogini Mara Healy to any and all students who would like to dive deeper into and refine their understanding of savasana, mritta mudra, yoga nidra, asanas for energetic yoga practices and restorative yoga practices, and deep stretch in their yoga practice. We will additionally cover balancing internal with external practice, as well as hands-on techniques for savasana. JOIN US!

A TT weekend with Mara normally costs $200, but this weekend anyone can drop-in for any amount of time for $50.  The lecture will run 8am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday, with a break for Asana practice.  Asana practices on Saturday and Sunday (10:30am-12noon) can also be attended for a $5 per class drop-in fee.

Intro to Universal Yoga Weekend

We are opening up Weekend Eight of Balanced Unity 200 hour Teacher Training with Yogini Mara Healy to any and all students who would like to dive deeper into and refine their understanding of the role of practice for each sheath of mayakoshas, assisting and adjusting techniques for arm asanas of Universal Yoga. We will additionally cover the basic use of props for arm asanas, intro to cross- mat practices and energy classes like spinning, diagonal energy, etc. JOIN US!

Chinese New Year Festival

lionkoThe Peaceful Dragon is hosting its 19th annual Chinese New Year’s Festival on Saturday, February 6th, from 11am to 2pm. Admission is just $3 per family, or FREE with a donation of a non-perishable food item for Loaves and Fishes charity.

Fun for the entire family, come celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Monkey! The festival will begin with the colorful ceremonial Lion Dance and Dragon Dance, said to bring good luck to everyone for the coming year. Then throughout the festival you can enjoy exciting demonstrations of Chinese martial arts and health arts including Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Yoga, and performing arts such as traditional Chinese dance and music.

Local experts will be on hand to exhibit various Asian arts and cultural practices such as feng shui, calligraphy, acupuncture and Chinese medicine. There will be a fun game room for kids, plus face painting, arts & crafts and more.

Free introductory mini-classes in tai chi, yoga and kung fu will be offered for both children and adults, and there will be special festival-day discounts if you’re interested in enrolling in The Peaceful Dragon’s ongoing classes. Catered Chinese noodles will be available to purchase for lunch.

Here in Charlotte, the Asian population has grown rapidly in recent years and the holiday and its traditions remains an important part of immigrants’ lives. The Peaceful Dragon’s celebration is open to everyone, and is particularly of interest to Americans looking for the chance to discover some of the wonders of authentic and traditional Asian culture.

Additional festival highlights include ongoing raffle drawings and door prizes, and FREE shuttle parking. The festivities are all held indoors so the festival takes place rain or shine.

Chinese New Year Banquet

In accord with wu-de and the customs of a traditional Chinese martial arts and health arts school, this banquet affords our entire “kung fu family” the chance to welcome the new year together to show support and bring good luck to each other.

This always-exciting annual banquet includes Student, Disciple and Teacher-level promotions; special awards ceremonies; live d.j. with dancing and partying; raffle prizes and more. Family and friends are welcome! The banquet dinner will be catered and held this year right here at The Peaceful Dragon, and will include appetizers, multiple entrees, dessert, and iced tea. For spirits it’s BYOB.

Tickets are on sale now at our front counter on a first come, first served basis. Seating is limited and tickets may sell out so don’t wait. Last day for purchase is Wednesday, February 10 – sorry, no exceptions for latecomers.

Adults tickets $45, children 12 and under half price.

Day-Long Meditation Retreat

Master Eric Sbarge, head instructor at The Peaceful Dragon, will lead this extended session of Chan (Zen) meditation, interspersed with relaxing and invigorating yoga and qigong as well as discussions on meditation principles, methods, and Chan philosophy. The retreat is open to and suitable for everyone regardless of experience levels.

CACMA Tournament

Sifu encourages all students to compete or attend the CACMA Queen’s Cup Tournament. There are divisions for all age and skill levels, so even beginners should try. Many of your instructors will be judging the competitions. This is an excellent opportunity to see other school’s martial arts styles. Spring Yoga Workshop

Join Marayogini for a workshop introducing the yogic meanings of Fascia, Flexibility and Freedom. The group will explore the concepts and practices that underscore yogic transformation via tensegrity, conductivity and the inherent patterning repeated throughout the human complex. Students will come away with a new understanding of the channels (nadis) of the body both on a physical, energetic and mental level. This will all be explained through the vehicle of Samkhya Philosophy and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Shaolin Workshop with Venerable Guolin Shi

Nicknamed the “Iron Arhat”, Venerable Guolin Shi was the former head monk and teacher at China’s famed Shaolin Temple who is world-renowned for his expertise in all facets of Shaolin training. He is a long-time friend of The Peaceful Dragon, and while he rarely travels from his own Overseas Shaolin Temple in New York, he has led near-annual workshops here at The Peaceful Dragon.

Shaolin includes the practices of Chan (Zen) meditation, qigong (energy work), internal and external forms of kung fu, and much more. This comprehensive workshop is ideal for students who have at least some experience in tai chi, kung fu or qigong, though beginners with no experience are still welcome and can surely benefit from it.

The curriculum in this workshop will include a combination of traditional Shaolin qigong and meditation, empty-hand forms, and self-defense techniques and applications.  You will learn an Internal/External form called Shaolin Chang Hu Xin Yi Men Quan Form.

Workshop hours: Friday 6-9pm; Saturday 9-5pm; and Sunday 10-4pm.

Children’s Class with Venerable Guolin Shi

Master Guolin will teach a special one hour Children’s Class our little and young dragons on Saturday, April 23 from 12-1pm.

Master Guolin is the former head coach of the famed Shaolin Temple, and he’s designated successor to the Abbott of the temple, Shi Yongxin. Currently Master Guolin is resident Abbott at the Shaolin Overseas Temple in New York.

Student Appreciation Barbecue

To thank you for your dedication and hard work as students or family members supporting our students, The Peaceful Dragon welcomes you to our annual barbecue. We’re providing all the food and drink for this family-fun bash!

The barbecue will be held at the Picnic Pavilion in Winget Park, just a couple of minutes’ drive from The Peaceful Dragon. Come out with the whole family and enjoy sports, games, water gun fights – or just a relaxing afternoon in the shade of the covered pavilion.

This event is totally FREE for the whole family, and will be held rain or shine. Please register at our front counter by Thursday, May 5 so we will have a head count for how much food to prepare.

Drumstrong

This year as a charitable fundraiser and community service, The Peaceful Dragon is teaming up with the international charity event Drumstrong to help raise money to fight cancer. If your family has not directly been affected by cancer, surely close relatives and friends have been and this is a great chance for you to play a personal role and make a difference in the fight against this dread disease.

On Saturday, May 21 we will take part in Drumstrong’s day-long “Drumathon” with a continuous drum circle, and we will be holding a simultaneous continuous tai chi and kung fu circle on the event grounds. At the event there will also be top-quality live bands throughout the day, vendors, a yogathon, performers, and much more.

Celebrating its ten-year anniversary, Drumstrong was founded right here in Charlotte and now has branches nationally and worldwide. The founder, Scott Swimmer, is a former student and long-time friend of The Peaceful Dragon.

The way your participation works is simple: As a participant, you seek sponsors beforehand to pledge a donation based on the amount of time you plan to continually drum, do kung fu, do tai chi, or any combination of these activities.  Getting sponsors is easy – people like to help!  For an additional copy of the pledge sheet, please click here.

Tai Chi to Boost Health and Vitality
Through lecture, discussion and hands-on applications you’ll gain a thorough understanding of Tai Chi’s key philosophical principles and how to put them directly to work for your own health and well-being. Movement emphasis will be on perfecting your forms, smoothing transitions between movements, and using tui shou (push hands) patterns to refine posture.

Session II: 6:00pm-9:30pm
Tai Chi Self-Defense and Push Hands
You’ll learn principles, strategies and methods to maximize your inherent power, and minimize your disadvantages. See how positioning and leverage allow you to make the most of your physical and energetic power. Learn to develop explosive “fa jing” striking and breaking power.

International Kuoshu Tournament

Essentials of Medical Qigong Workshop

Qigong, the Chinese term for “energy work” or “energy cultivation” is at the core of the tai chi, kung fu and other arts taught at The Peaceful Dragon. Medical qigong is a branch of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) that specifically looks at health and healing practices through cultivation of the three pillars of qigong: mind, body and breath. An understanding of medical qigong principles can help you gain the greatest health benefits out of your practice of your tai chi, kung fu and related arts.

In this workshop led by Master Eric Sbarge, you’ll explore essential yin/yang, 5-element and pakua theory as it pertains to optimizing mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Additionally, you’ll learn and practice traditional medical qigong exercises to strengthen and heal the five main yang organs and five main yin organs of the body.

Mountain Tai Chi and Pakua Retreat

Relax and rejuvenate while enjoying intensive instruction and practice in the Chinese arts of tai chi and pakua, complemented with sessions of qigong, Zen meditation and yoga.

Led by Master Eric Sbarge, director and head instructor of The Peaceful Dragon in Charlotte, NC, the retreat will be held at the beautiful YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC, just 10 minutes from Asheville.

Suited for beginners or advanced practitioners, from teens to senior citizens, the retreat includes all instruction, comfortable lodging, and all meals except for Saturday evening when you’ll have free time to explore downtown Asheville or simply relax on your own in the wooded mountains with hundreds of acres and many beautiful vistas and trails.

We have a limited number of rooms available, register early!

Early-bird savings by September 1, 2016:

Double occupancy: $550 public; $425 for Peaceful Dragon and affiliated schools’ students AND their family members! (We will gladly assign you a roommate if you wish).

This weekend covers intro to primary and intermediate series, basics of tristana, mantra, counting in Sanskrit, the 8 limb path, postures named for insects and animals, science of asana pairs, adjusting the foundations of postures, use of props for students. Students will be required to attend a minimum number of ashtanga classes at another location at additional cost.
