The meditative and spiritual aspects of yoga can offer even more rewards than the physical.

Our Curriculum

Our comprehensive curriculum taught by our dedicated, professional teachers makes the Yoga Institute at The Peaceful Dragon a one-of-a-kind training center. You will be immersed in a complete and traditional mind-body-spirit system that offers positive, life-changing benefits from day one.

Of course you’ll enjoy our top-quality asana (physical posture and movement) classes offered daily at a variety of convenient times, seven days a week.

But what distinguishes The Peaceful Dragon is that you’ll also receive in-depth lessons in the inner teachings of yoga including its history, philosophy, medical principles, anatomy, meditation methods, chakras and energy systems, and much more.

These in-depth lessons are taught through a series of ongoing seminars, workshops, lectures, roundtable discussion groups, on-line lessons, and more.

These diverse series are designed to allow even the busiest and most time-constrained yoga student an in-depth understanding of the mental and spiritual inner-teachings of yoga— the kind that really make lasting improvements to your happiness and enjoyment of life—in addition to the many physical benefits.

And best of all, ALL of these ongoing seminars, workshops, lectures and lessons are included in your tuition at no extra cost to you!

Why are these series on the mental and physical components of yoga so important for improving your inner peace and enjoyment of life? Because while your physical training in yoga will help you get a fit and healthier body, only the addition of the mental and spiritual inner teachings of yoga will give you the most positive and powerful life-changing benefits, including:

  • Lowered stress and anxiety
  • More loving and harmonious relationships
  • A happier and more positive outlook on life
  • A clearer and more productive mind
  • Lasting inner peace and contentment

These series address topics that are rarely if ever taught in most yoga classes, including: The study of ancient yoga classics such as the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Hatha Yoga Pradipika and more; the Eight Limbs of Yoga; Ayurvedic medicine principles; dietary and yogic lifestyle guidelines; pranayama breathing methods; chakras and energetic systems; kriyas and cleansing techniques; concentration and meditation methods and techniques; the mayakoshas or sheathes we are comprised of; anatomy and body adjustments; comparing and contrasting styles of yoga; the student-guru relationship; and much more.

Lappa trained for decades with many legends of the Indian yoga world, including B.K.S. Iyengar, Patthabbi Jois and others, and he spends several months each year training in advanced Tantric yoga with Tibetan Buddhist lamas and monastics in Nepal. He is widely recognized as the top yogi to come out of the former Soviet Union countries of Central and North Asia, and his Universal Yoga is now practiced and taught by serious yogis around the world.

“I lost 50 pounds during the first 6 months of starting classes at the Peaceful Dragon. I am stronger, more confident and healthier at 33 than I was at 23. My mind is calmer and my focus at work is much sharper.
The curriculum here is diversified. It offers something for any age or type of person. The instructors treat every student with respect and help the student reach the highest level of martial arts they are capable of. The students here all work together to further their knowledge of the arts.
The Peaceful Dragon has provided a life changing experience for me that I know will have many benefits today and as I grow older. I changed to a vegetarian diet which greatly improved many aspects of my health and attitude. My attitude toward others is more patient, friendly and open. My family notices a much happier person.”
–Frank Tippett, 33, Bond Investor, Southeast Charlotte, NC
“I train in Tai Chi and Yoga. I like the flexible schedule for both classes. Instructors and teacher are interested in seeing students learn and evolve.
The instructors are friendly and desire to teach students at their own pace. This is comforting to those of us who might learn forms a little more slowly. Learning is so very individual. No one is judged on progress at The Peaceful Dragon. You learn to accept yourself and start to acknowledge your progress yourself.
The Peaceful Dragon is a wonderful facility. We should all be proud to have such a quality training facility in the city of Charlotte.”
–Sherry Kordecki, 63, Retired, Charlotte, NC

Our Professional Teachers

Our Director of Yoga Studies, Yogini Mara Healy

Our Director of Yoga Studies, Yogini Mara Healy

All of our yoga teachers were trained in the Universal Yoga system by Yogini Mara Healy, our Director of Yoga Studies. This helps ensure consistency and authenticity in every class that we offer.

Mara Healy is Andrey Lappa’s senior-most disciple in North America and a top practitioner of Universal Yoga. She is also highly-experienced in classical Ashtanga Vinyasa and other major systems of yoga. She leads Teacher Training programs, workshops and classes throughout The United States as well as right here at The Peaceful Dragon.

Each of our Universal-inspired yoga teachers brings an average of 20 years of experience in mind-body practices, and they continue to train regularly to improve their knowledge and skills both with Yogini Mara Healy and with The Peaceful Dragon’s director and head instructor, Master Eric Sbarge. Master Sbarge has almost 40 years of experience in the practice and teaching of Eastern art forms including Shaolin yoga, Zen meditation, qigong, tai chi, and Shaolin kung fu. He has written for numerous publications on topics including Shaolin philosophy, history, methods and techniques, and in 2005 he was inducted into The United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Outstanding Kung Fu Master.
