Power Yoga Classes:  What Is It and What Are Its Benefits?

Yoga can hardly be called a trend – it has been practiced for over 5,000 years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans are enjoying its health benefits.   Have you heard about Power Yoga classes?  Today we’re going to talk about what it is and how it can benefit you.

This concept has become increasingly popular but many are confused as to what it actually does and how you can benefit from power yoga classes.  Unless you are a yogi, or a person skillful in yoga, you may not realize all the various types and forms of yoga classes offered.

Some people assume that yoga moves at a slow pace and focuses solely on meditation. And though those styles do exist, a newer, stronger kind was introduced and altered yoga as we know it.

So, what are Power Yoga classes?

Power Yoga is a fitness-based Vinyasa practice; Vinyasa translating to “arranging something in a special way.” Specific to yoga, yogis flow through movements from one pose to the next.

Power Yoga is based mostly on a repetitive series of approximately 75 poses that takes an hour and a half to two hours to complete, repeating itself each class period. Because of the emphasis on strength and agility, it is also referred to as “gym yoga.”

How can I benefit from Power Yoga classes?

Though yoga is often thought of as slow and fluid-like motions, Power Yoga is a rigorous exercise. The benefits of Power Yoga classes include both mental and physical health.

Mental Health:  Yoga has consistently shown to be extremely valuable in mental health because it can help relieve stress and anxiety, sharpen concentration, boost mood, increase mindfulness and increase energy levels. Many psychiatrists and psychologists also offer yoga as a part of the treatment plan of several mental disorders such as depression, sleep disorders, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Physical Health:  Yoga promotes stability, flexibility, and strength. Accelerate the intensity with Power Yoga classes, and the physical benefits are amazing! Followers of Power Yoga advocate that it is much more than “regular” yoga, as it is an aerobic or cardiovascular exercise. Often also referred to as “fitness yoga,” the totality of the poses encourages an accelerated heart rate and a more rigorous effort through pose sequences.

Are Power Yoga Classes Right for You?

Though the practice of Power Yoga is welcomed by all, it is important to consider its ultimate purpose and your physical health. If you’re looking for a more traditional yoga style that is based around meditation, Power Yoga may not be the best fit.

Although instructors try to offer modified yoga poses for beginners, it is always nice to know what you may be getting yourself into – in this case, a rigorous workout. And as always, it is important to discuss any new exercise routines with your healthcare provider to establish its safety, especially if you are living with a chronic condition.

My wife has been considering on signing herself up for yoga classes, but she doesn’t know how it can benefit her in any way. I like how you mentioned that yoga can not only improve health physically, but it can also help the body mentally. My wife will be delighted to know that yoga can help relieve her stress and anxiety, and help boost her mood.

I like your point in that yoga can improve your athletic performance. My sister is an awesome tennis player and is obviously looking to get better at every corner. I think I will encourage her to find a professional yoga course that can actually help her perform better on the court.
